Sara has extensive knowledge of the Egyptian legal and business environment and particular expertise in inward investment, corporate/ commercial transactions, private equity and M&A, projects and infrastructure including PPP and finance transactions. Sara is currently the Secretary – General of BEBA and was a founding member.

Hussein Refaie brings over 40 years of extensive banking experience from institutions such as Citibank, Barclays Bank Egypt, Société Générale, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and ICL Egypt. He served as CFO at these institutions before joining the National Bank of Egypt in August 2008 as Group CFO. He later became an Executive Board Member overseeing finance, foreign relations, and treasury in April 2015. He was part of the team responsible for the comprehensive restructuring of the National Bank of Egypt.

Before joining the Industrial Development Bank, Refaie was the Chairperson and Managing Director of Suez Canal Bank from May 2017 to March 2024, playing a key role in restructuring the bank. He also served on various boards, including the Federation of Egyptian Banks from March 2020. Refaie holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from Ain Shams University (1982), a Master’s in International Management from Thunderbird University (1988), and a CPA from Washington (1993).

Sherine Shohdy

Sherine was appointed Coverage Director in Egypt in August 2020. Sherine joins CDC with a wealth of experience working in Egypt and across the Middle Eastern and North Africa (MENA) region, both in development finance and across the private sector. She most recently worked as a senior consultant to the International Finance Corporation with a focus on the manufacturing, agribusiness and services sectors across the MENA region, having previously spent close to a decade at the institution working on investments mostly focused on the infrastructure and natural resources sectors in Egypt and neighbouring countries. Sherine has also held senior positions at Hassan Allam Holding, its subsidiary Hassan Allam Utilities and the Arab African International Bank. She is a Chevening Scholar and holds a MSc in Investment Banking and Islamic Finance from the University of Reading (UK) and a BA in Accounting and Finance from the American University in Cairo (Egypt).
